During students' time at Central York Middle School, the counseling team will help them prepare for high school and their future. Below is information regarding Smart Futures, York County School of Technology, and Academic Assistance for seventh and eighth graders.

Each school year 8th graders have the option to explore the opportunities offered by York County School of Technology (YCST). Every 8th grader will receive the presentation in October at CYMS. Following this event, YCST holds an evening OPEN HOUSE in their building where students and families can explore the programs, tour the building, and even apply online while there. Applications are often due the first weekend in December, and the interview process is approximately December through February, with those students who applied by the deadline traveling to YCST for a school field trip.

Requirements for YCST

The following criteria are what YCST looks for in an applicant, with a possible point value of 100 points.

Grades (Each A is worth 4 points, B’s are 3 points, C’s earn 2 points and D’s earn 1 point).
Attendance - YCST are looking for students who come to school everyday on time. Students who have more than 3 unexcused absences from school will lose points in this area.
Behavior - Students lose points in this section for any disciplinary referrals.
Application essays- There are 3 questions asked in the application process. A maximum of 5 points are assigned to each question.
Interview process - The interview process occurs sometime in between December and February. Our School Counselors meet and practice interviewing skills with every student who has applied.

Smart Futures

During middle school, 7th and 8th grade students participate in career lessons led by the school counselors.

In 7th grade, students participate in 3 Smart Futures lessons:

Knowledge Skills Ability Survey

These lessons help our middle school students build their career awareness, explore career options, build career readiness skills, and help them plan for the future.
