The ESL program at Central York Middle School strives to make students become successful, independent learners.  Students will work on the 4 skills of language acquisition:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening
There are 2 sections of ESL this year:  a beginner class and a class of intermediate and advanced language learners.  Learners represent 9 different countries-  we are a diverse group with many experiences to share!

Support for content classes
There are a variety of sources of support for English Language Learners (ELLs):
  • Reading Support:  Most students are placed in a reading program (System 44 or Read 180) to help them become proficient readers
  • Math Support-  (Math Lab) available for some students who show they lack fundamental skills that are necessary to understand  Algebra and higher level math classes
  • Classroom Assistants- The ESL program has a Title 3 Assistant, Alex Thomas, who pushes into classes with the ELLs.  She makes content more comprehensible, helps them to understand expectations and is in the room for additional support.
  • Team Study:  During 9th period, students may choose to attend a Team Study for ESL students, in room 46 (the ESL classroom).  During this time, Mrs. Thomas helps students to review content that was given in classes and she works with them on study skills and organization.  Students also have time to complete homework

Testing  -  a variety of assessments will be given throughout the school year to measure student growth

  •  W-APT-  Given to newly enrolled students to measure proficiency levels and place students in a class.
  • ACCESS test-  February- March   This test measures growth in language acquisition
  • PSSA-  March- April-  measures growth in content areas (math, science, reading and writing)
